Podiatry & Chiropody

by May 15, 2014

The human foot is a complicated structure composed of 26 bones, 16 joints, numerous ligaments and muscles.

On average, each one of us will take between 8,000 and 10,000 steps per day, hardly surprising therefore that much of the population will at some point experience a problem with their feet.

Andrew Booth , MChS, DPodM, HPC Registered, offers appointments for private based Chiropody/ Podiatry Service including the treatment of :

Nail Condtions.  A wide range of nail conditions can be successfully and painlessly treated, often thickened nails are difficult for patients to treat themselves, fungal infections of the nails are extremely common and a wide range of preparations are available to help remove infection. One of the most problematic nail conditions we treat are those that seem to curl into the toe, (involuted nails) such nail conditions can be as a result of inheritance, inappropriate footwear, cutting the nails too short, whatever the cause the outcome is often the same,  pain!!. Conservative regular treatment can be very successful, however on occasion the appropriate treatment option is to perform nail surgery during which the offending section of nail is removed and chemically treated to avoid nail re -growth.

Hard Skin/ Callus.   Initially hard skin/callus forms in response to  pressure, however  when pressure becomes excessive ,  there is an increase in skin production and thus thickening of the skin on the foot known as callus or hard skin develops.

Corns . Are small localised areas of compressed thickened skin they are usually round in shape and can cause considerable pain and discomfort particularly when walking

Verrucae. Are warts that are found on the foot.   Verruc ae may contain small black dots , they can appear as single or multiple infections and are often can confused with corns,( verrucae tend to be painful to pinch, corns are painful when  direct pressure is applied and tend to occur on weight bearing areas of the foot)

Foot  Function.  Abnormal foot function is often the underlying cause for a whole host of potential lower limb problems. Ranging from callus and corns, in-growing nails, Metatarsalgia,  Morton’s Neuroma, commonly occurring heel problems such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles Tendonopathy, and conditions affecting the lower leg e.g  shin splints, knee , hip and lower back pain may well be associated with a particular foot type. A Biomechanical assessment of foot and lower limb function  can be useful in helping to identify the causes of conditions mentioned above,  orthotics or insoles if required,  can help to alleviate painful foot and lower limb conditions, particularly when used in conjunction with supporting therapies  carried out by Back and Body Care practitioners.

I also now run a weekly clinic specialising in the use of low level laser therapy.
Low level laser therapy helps to increase the speed of repair in acute injuries and also stimulates the body’s repair processes in cases of non-healing or chronic conditions.  As a result LLLT can be used to help provide pain relief for a wide range of conditions for example:

Plantar Fasciitis, (heel pain), Achilles Tendonopathy, shin splints

Athletic and sports injury’s (used by Olympic athletes, and professional sporting clubs)

Ligamentous and muscular pain ( sprain’s acute and chronic)

Osteoarthritis,

Rheumatoid Arthritis

and numerous other conditions affecting the feet and lower limbs.

In addition to efficacy LLLT has the added advantage of being drug-free, pain-free, non-invasive, easily and quickly applied and has an excellent side effect profile. It is often less expensive than alternative treatments and has few contraindications.

Low level laser therapy is not harmful. Lasers used for tissue stimulation have insufficient strength to damage cells. Low Level Laser or Soft Lasers often use visible light – wavelengths in the region of 600 nm to 830 nm, around in the Red and Near Infrared Spectrum, which is totally safe and harmless to our organ tissues, cells or skin.

Testimonials:

” Feeling very fed up with this Plantar Fasciitis, having tried many different avenues and none helping to releif the pain. I was walking/ hobbling down the street in Newport to see a notice that said ‘Now treating Plantar Fasciitis with low level laser’, so i went straight in and booked an appointment. I booked a course of treatment and i could feel an improvement after each week. I am now walking around quite normal and feeling much better in myself, a very clever treatment ”

 Sharon

” I would like to say how pleased I am with the results of the laser treatment on my foot. It is the first time anything has worked, and no side effects. My foot feels “quite normal” for the first time in years, and am pain free for longer between treatments ”

Mrs P Reid, Newport

“ After years of suffering with severe arthritis in both knees, following 5 weeks of treatment I am now sleeping through the night without pain, and have not taken painkillers for 3 weeks now, even my family have noticed that my walking has improved ”

Mrs L, Lilleshall

Pilates

by May 8, 2014

Pilates is suitable for people of all ages and physical ability, as most exercises can be adapted.  Pilates exercises can be performed on the floor (matwork), standing, sitting on a suitable chair, using a fit ball, with resistance in the form of bands, circles and weights.

There simply is no limit to the challenge to your body.

Pilates exercises can help to:-

  • give you a flatter stomach
  • alleviate lower back pain
  • improve posture
  • create greater flexibility and mobility
  • reduce stress levels and promote relaxation.

The most important thing is not what you do but how you do it.  Pilates is designed to create a fusion of mind and body, so that without thinking you will move with economy, grace and balance.  The exercises are designed to develop balance throughout the body and give you strong stable muscles that are flexible and correctly aligned.

At the Back & Body Care Clinic we have a small studio suitable for a maximum of six people, which therefore gives the instructor an opportunity to spend time with individual clients.  The classes are run in blocks of six weeks, and if attended on a regular basis can have very beneficial results. Realistically you should see results in three to six months – Pilates will change the shape of your body. It is important to remember that subtle changes in how you sit at work, how you drive, etc., will also pay dividends – you have to be responsible for your own body.

Pilates will make you more aware of where your strengths and weaknesses lie.  By weakness I don’t just mean lack of muscular strength – a tight, inflexible back is as problematic as a weak one.  Pilates exercises balance the body, different movements challenge us in different ways.  I find when I teach that the movements my clients least enjoy are usually the ones they cannot do very well. This often indicates a weakness, so instead of avoiding these exercises it is important to persist.

If you need any further information please do not hesitate to contact us on 01952 825042,

Pilates looks to improve posture and give you a better understanding of how to release tension in your body and therefore alleviate unnecessary stress on joints.
Pilates is particularly effective in dealing with back, neck and shoulder pain by increasing awareness of core control.

Homeopathy

by August 24, 2016

Why choose Homeopathy?
Homeopathy provides a positive path to regaining control of health and well-being. I like to think of homeopathy as a complimentary medicine rather than an alternative medicine. Worrying about having to choose one way and not be able to use the other is not healthy. I want you to feel free to use both, wherever necessary. My aim is simple. To revitalise the immune system (vital force) so it can get back to doing its job of protecting our bodies. I will also help support stressed systems: skin, bowel, sexual organs, lungs, digestion etc. because we live in an age when fast-living, stress and pollution are placing increasing pressures on our systems. Children respond particularly well to homeopathy. Many childhood illnesses and conditions can be treated safely and quickly without suppression or after effects. Children can get well with homeopathy. Adults can get better with homeopathy. Animals can too.
Did you know ………………………………?
* Homeopathy is the second largest system of medicine in the world.
* Increasing amount of research demonstrating homeopathy is an effective form of treatment.
* There are over 3000 registered practitioners across the UK.
* Homeopathy can be prescribed alongside other forms of medicine.
* It is a well – regulated and safe form of medicine with little or no side – effects and it is not tested on animals.
* 70% of those that use Homeopathy experience improvements in health
What can Homeopathy offer you?
Homeopathy focuses on the mental, emotional and physical symptoms of a patient. The patient is treated as an individual, their condition is treated that way too which is why consultations take longer than conventional medical appointments. Homeopathy offers a way to treat the causes of imbalance rather than just the symptom of the imbalance. I like to think of it as homeopathy turning off the tap, not simply mopping up the water. Many people choose homeopathy to relieve acute conditions such as hayfever, headaches, colds and fevers for eg. Some people choose homeopathy to help with chronic illness like arthritis, asthma, chronic fatigue, cancer. Regardless of the reason, the overall aim of homeopathy is to return the patients back to health so they no longer have the imbalance that causes the symptoms.
The main advantages of homeopathy are:
An individual approach to a patient
The use of medicine in small doses
The absence of addiction and withdrawal syndrome
The ability to use multiple medicines at the same time
The possibility of a combination of traditional and other treatments
Treatment of all age groups, ranging from fetal and neonatal period

What does the homeopathy treatment involve?

The treatment will involve an in depth consultation reviewing your history and all of your symptoms. I will discuss your daily routines, habits, food desires, your dislikes, everything that makes you, you. Once I have made a decision on the prescription, I will give you remedies to take away and take over a set period of time. Sometimes, I may use tissue salts as well with the remedies, if they are indicated. Occasionally, I may use flower essences too.
Homeopathic medicines are made in a Homeopathic pharmacy by repeatedly diluting and succussing (shaking) a preparation of the original material, mainly plants and minerals, in water and alcohol. After dilution the medicine is added to lactose (milk sugar) tablets or pillules which can be taken by mouth or dissolved in water.

What about seeing my doctor ?
It is recommended that you maintain your relationship with your GP or specialist throughout your condition. When necessary homeopathic and conventional approaches can be used alongside one another to give the most effective and appropriate medical care. In many cases homeopathy treatment can gradually reduce or remove the need for conventional drugs. Any change in use of conventional medication should be discussed with your prescribing doctor as treatment progresses.

Preparing for the appointment
The initial consultation may take around 90 minutes, but please allow plenty of time because I prefer to finish a consultation at a point where both practitioner and client are at a natural end, not when 90 minutes are up. Please also bring with you a list of the names/doses of any medications you are taking, information about your medical history and that of your immediate and extended family.
After the consultation
Some people find that they feel more relaxed and lighter after the consultation and feel much better. Others may have discussed situations or remembered times that they thought they had forgotten or wanted to forget and so may feel a little unsettled. When you leave the consulting room, you will have usually have remedies to take for either a short period or longer depending on the prescription. You may find that that you have some new symptoms arise which quickly go. This is your body healing. How quickly you will feel rebalanced depends very much on what sort of condition you have. A complaint you have had for a long time will not normally disappear overnight, other conditions often improve rapidly. If you are at all anxious about how you feel, I am happy for you to contact me outside of clinical hours. Usually I will like to see you again anywhere between two weeks and six weeks to monitor your progress on the understanding that you can contact me before your next appointment if you have any concerns.
Why not book a free 15 minute appointment and see whether homeopathy suits you?
You may be pleasantly surprised!

Guided Meditation

by April 13, 2016

Guided meditation classes are held at the clinic on a Friday evening 6.30 – 7.30pm. Participants have the opportunity to enjoy an hour away from the stresses that we all experience in everyday life. The classes start with a full body relaxation and then continue with either a guided visualisation ( to keep the mind occupied whilst you are meditating) or a mindfulness meditation in the form of a body scan and concentration on the breath. Both give the opportunity to encounter peace, calm and also the possibility of finding that moment of pure bliss than can be encountered in a deep meditative state. Please telephone the clinic on 01952 825042 to book your place.

Pain Visualisation

Whether you have been in a car accident, had an accident at work, suffered from back or neck problems or have experienced any other unidentified pain, DITI can actually visualise your pain and you will receive a full medical report to confirm your condition.

Procedure

Your first screening includes your initial consultation with an ACCT qualified Thermographer. Your medical history will be taken along with details of any problems you may be experiencing.

You will then be asked to disrobe for the scanning procedure to be performed. There is no physical contact with either the camera or from the Thermographer. The scans are taken in a private, warm, pleasant environment and the scans can be taken standing or seated.

Once the scans have been taken you will be asked to dress and your Thermographer will show you the scans that have been taken. If this is your first breast screening you will be asked to book in for your 3 month repeat scan so we can establish your unique thermal pattern.

Once you have left the clinic your Thermographer will send your medical history along with the scans to our worldwide medical team for analysis by a medical doctor.

Your full medical report will be sent to our head office and a copy of your report and scans will be emailed or posted out to you. We can also arrange to email your report and scans to your Medical Practitioner.

If you are worried about your condition we can arrange for an urgent response for a small extra fee.

100% Safe Breast Screening

Thermography is a medically recognised, non invasive, accurate method of breast screening. Every woman has a unique thermal breast pet tern that should not change over time. Any changes to the pattern may indicate the early stages of disease.thermography detects these subtle physiological changes that occur with breast pathology, whether it is cancer, fibrocystic disease, an infection or vascular disease. It is the only scan that can detect inflammatory breast cancer. Thermography can pick up early active breast disease at a stage where it is impossible for other breast screening programmes to detect.

  • 100% safe – no harmful radiation
  • No painful compression of the breast

We think that breast screening should be available to all women. Screening from age 50 is not early detection because younger women have breast problems too. Thermography offers a safer screening procedure for all ages.

  • Females of any age
  • Women who have found a breast lump
  • Women with a history of breast cancer BRACA1 & BRACA2
  • Women with Ductal Carcinoma in Situ DCIS
  • Women with dense breast tissue

  • Women with breast cancer who want to monitor healing

Seichem Reiki

Usui reiki is a very ‘earthy’ healing energy, whereas Seichem reiki has a more balanced energy. Four elemental healing rays. These are Reiki (earth), Sophiel (water), Angelic lights (air & spirit) and Sakara (fire). These rays work individually or together, depending on the needs of the recipient. It promotes and accelerates the healing process while providing deep relaxation which helps with stress.

During the treatment the client will remain fully clothed and lie on a massage couch. The therapist’s hands will be placed in reiki positions down the front and then the back of the client. The client will often feel heat or air wafting across them during the session as the energy passes into the body to help heal and relax.
