Who is it for?
The Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist is trained to work with the full-range of age groups from under 5 year olds to children and teenagers, tailoring their approach to suit the child's way of communicating.
Very young children are seen together with parents to think about patterns of interaction, whereas older children might communicate via drawing and play and a teenager might wish to talk about their feelings.
How long does it take?
Intervention might last anywhere from two to six sessions to regular appointments over several years.
What might it help with?
Depending on the age of the child or young person child psychotherapy may help with difficulties such as:
- feeding
- sleeping
- aggressive outbursts and tantrums
- problems with peer relationships
- under achieving at school
- oppositional behaviour
|
- eating disorders
- self harm
- depression
- anxiety
- insecurity
- lack of confidence
- post traumatic stress
|
Through the relationship with the therapist in a consistent setting the child or young person may become able to express their most troubling thoughts and feelings and gradually begin to put them into words rather than actions.
the therapist can help the child make sense of their experience and develop their own individuality and potential.
The child or young person may begin to feel less anxious, more able to learn and better equipped to sustain friendships and other relationships.
Parents, carers and other family members can also be helped to make sense of a child's behaviour and explore how their own issues might interfere with their parenting.
